#### How can *Building Math Confidence!* help with math?

This compact disc is designed for the 7th grader through adult learner. Many potentially good students become afraid of taking math courses in middle-school or junior high or above, become anxious when they are required to take it in high school or college, or want or need to upgrade their math skills as adults.

The program does **not** provide the content of a specific math course. There are many books and CDs which do that. But anxiety about math is more basic. Anxious thoughts about math can block our ability to concentrate on whatever content we may try to read or understand.

Early in the 20th century, the Russian psychologist, Pavlov,
found he could change a dog's behavior by conditioning.
American psychologists later found humans could condition away many
of their own anxieties by combining muscle relaxation and
visualization.

Frankly, my own personal difficulty with college-level math ended
my college plans as an engineering student. I changed majors
and moved into the field of speech communication. When I found
my own public speaking students "hitting similar walls" at Iowa
State University, I found this way to help them overcome that fear.
When I adapted this same approach to reducing anxiety for math
students it has worked as well.

**A comment on the Program:*** **"My son
was a seventh-grader who hated math. He wouldn't do his
homework and wouldn't talk about it when my husband and I tried to
bring it up. After using the CD, he was willing to work with
the math and improved in his math class. The CD made him aware
of his muscle tension and the crippling negative talk. WHen he
realized he was also tensing up in his Spanish class, he realized
his muscles were tensing up, too, so he relaxed the muscles and
improved in his Spanish class, too."*

P**ublished Validation Study: **Tony Vander
Zyl and James W. Lohr, "An Audiotaped Program for Reduction of High
School Students' Math Anxiety," *School Science and Mathematics*,
94-6, (1994). *"Those who participated had significant
reduction in math anxiety levels. Those who were not treated
had math anxiety levels which remained virtually unchanged."*
