This compact disc is designed for 7th graders through adult musicians. Often students want to sing in chorus or a choir with their friends, but are stopped by fear. Many seasoned performers face “stage fright” with every performance. They know the music thoroughly but ride on a cushion of anxious thoughts to and through their selections.

The program does not provide a voice-improvement course. There are many books and CDs which do that. But anxiety about singing is more basic. Anxious thoughts about singing can block our ability to concentrate on whatever content we may try to sing with clear expression.

Early in the 20th century, the Russian psychologist, Pavlov, found he could change a dog's behavior by conditioning.  American psychologists later found humans could condition away many of their own anxieties by combining muscle relaxation and mental visualization.

This CD combines these skills for use at home.  The first audio tracks explain how the program works, describe the muscle tensing and relaxing exercise and describe the visualization exercises.  Tracks 3-12 each provide one step from an invitation to perform to and through the performance itself.  It is important to relax and repeat tracks 3-12 five to ten times and visualize each specific step calmly before moving on to the next track or step in the program.

I believe that combining deep relaxation with repeated visualization reroutes thoughts about singing from the "emotional part" of the central brain to the "thought -and plan processing parts" of the frontal lobes of the brain.

From Pat: "I would definitely recommend this CD to others.  There is nothing else like it on the market.  I did not find this subject of reducing performance anxiety on any other on-line vocal training materials.  Reducing anxiety, on demand, is an important component of singing.  This CD is a good foundation for dealing with any unexpected changes just before and during a singing performance.  The exercises presented in the CD prepare one to quickly recover from sudden outside interruptions while performing.   The CD was very constructive because it covered nervousness caused by both internal and external factors.  The practices were articulated in a grounded and specific professional way, easy to understand step method."
